Knowing about the different parts of your car can help with its maintenance. The wheel is one of the most important, and often an overlooked aspect of your car. It contains many important parts that play a role in moving your car. One such part is your vehicle bolt pattern.

Understand Bolt Pattern

Before you start looking for a part, you should what it is, so you can look at the right place. Bolt patterns, also called lug patterns, PCD and bolt circles, refer to the diameter of an imaginary circle formed by the centers of the lug on your car's wheel. This bolt pattern consists of many bolt holes or studs in the wheel. A bolt pattern consists of two numbers. The first number indicates the number of bolts or studs present in the wheel while the second number indicates the diameter of each stud. For example, a bolt pattern of 4 X 50 means there are four bolt holes or studs and each of it is 50mm.

Identify Bolt Patterns

Now that you understand what bolt patterns are and where they will be located, get down to your wheel and actually look it up. This will give you a good idea of the bolt pattern of your car and can come handy when you want to fit custom rims for the wheel. You can also use this pattern for many art and craft work as well.

Measure Bolt Patterns

The next step is to measure the bolt patterns, so you know what to have. In general, if there are four, six or eight studs, measure the center to center distance between the two studs that are located straight opposite to each other. This is your bolt pattern diameter. On the other hand, if there are 5 to 7 studs, calculate the bolt pattern diameter for four and six studs respectively. Multiply this value by 1.05 if there are five studs and multiply by 1.03 if there are seven studs to get the exact value.

Do the Conversions

Use the wheel bolt pattern chart to convert from inches to the millimeter, if that works easily for you. For example, 4X3.93 inches would translate to 4X100 millimeter. You can do the conversions yourself or follow the chart given in the source section to make this conversion.

Armed with information about bolt patterns, you can now use it to create a custom rim for your wheel. More commonly though, bolt patterns are used to make a variety of different shapes for coloring and art and craft work.
